Dear Parents,
We will be exploring a wide variety of mathematical areas throughout the year. We will work as a class, in small groups and independently to explore these mathematical concepts. The students will write, draw, talk, make models or create graphs to represent information they have gathered. The will be encouraged to ask questions. Most importantly, they will be asked to explain their thinking.
The children will use a range of materials such as blocks, cubes, coins, clocks, rulers, geoboards, and other items to investigatge these concepts. Calculators and computers will also be used to enhance these mathematical concepts and skills.
Term 1: (specific expectations)
Graphing
-collects and organizes categorical or discrete data (e.g., conducts a simple survey) and displays the data using charts and graphs -uses titles and labels on charts, tables, and graphs (e.g., labels ordered appropriately along horizontal axes, uses appropriate scales) -describes and interprets primary data presented in charts and graphs
Patterning: -describes, extends and creates a variety of numeric patterns and geometric patterns
Geometry
-compares 2D shapes and 3D solids by their geometric properties using terms such as faces, edges, vertices, sides, pairs of parallel lines and types of angles
Number Sense
-reads, writes, represents, compares and orders numbers to 1000 -solves problems involving the addition and subtraction of single- and multi-digit whole numbers, using a variety of strategies (e.g., splitting, counting on )
